A Los Angeles mailing address does not always mean the property is inside LADWP territory. Confirm the exact parcel before transferring service.
Palm Springs & Coachella Valley
Water and waste districts change across city boundaries. Electricity delivery may remain with SCE even where a community-choice provider supplies generation.
Joshua Tree & High Desert
Some rural properties use a private well, septic system, or propane. A broad service-area boundary does not confirm that a main, meter, or connection exists at the property.

016–8 weeks before
- Confirm closing, lease, possession, and key-release dates with your agent or property manager.
- Decide what will move, store, sell, donate, or be responsibly disposed of.
- Obtain written mover estimates and confirm licensing, insurance, storage terms, and specialty-item handling.
- Photograph valuable belongings and create a simple room-by-room inventory.
- Review homeowners or renters insurance, including effective dates and transit or storage coverage.
- Measure furniture, doors, stairs, and elevators; create a placement plan for the new home.
023–4 weeks before
- Identify electricity, gas, water, sewer, waste, and internet providers using the exact property address.
- Schedule service starts and stops, allowing a short overlap when practical.
- Submit official USPS mail forwarding and update banks, employers, insurers, schools, and regular deliveries.
- Reserve movers or storage and confirm parking, gate, elevator, loading-zone, and certificate-of-insurance rules.
- Schedule agreed cleaning, repairs, landscaping, pool, pest, or appliance work.
- Update pet identification and veterinary records.
031–2 weeks before
- Reconfirm mover timing, addresses, contacts, written estimate, payment terms, and storage destination.
- Prepare a first-night kit with bedding, toiletries, chargers, tools, paper goods, snacks, and pet supplies.
- Refill prescriptions and plan safe transport for temperature-sensitive medication.
- Carry documents, jewelry, medications, devices, and irreplaceable items yourself.
- Inventory smart-home locks, cameras, thermostats, garage controls, hubs, and subscriptions for transfer.
- Confirm the final walk-through, key exchange, and building-access arrangements.
04Moving week
- Confirm the route, truck clearance, gate codes, parking, elevator reservation, and building contact.
- Photograph both homes and visible meter readings where safely accessible.
- Create a clearly marked “Do Not Load” area for keys, documents, medication, and valuables.
- Protect floors and delicate finishes; prepare appliances according to manufacturer instructions.
- Gather keys, remotes, manuals, warranties, and access instructions for the agreed handoff.
- Check weather, road closures, and official local emergency notices.
05Moving day
- Keep children and pets away from doors, driveways, and loading activity.
- Record existing condition before loading and before unloading.
- Direct furniture by room and compare cartons and furnishings with the inventory.
- Inspect closets, cabinets, garages, outdoor areas, attics, and storage spaces before leaving.
- Leave or collect keys, remotes, and codes exactly as agreed.
- At the new home, locate emergency exits, the electrical panel, and the water shutoff.
06First 48 hours
- Set up beds, medication, food, pet supplies, and one comfortable living space first.
- Confirm water, hot water, power, HVAC, refrigeration, internet, and waste service.
- Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms according to manufacturer or building guidance.
- Reset locks, gates, garage controls, alarms, and smart-home access where permitted.
- Photograph arrival condition and promptly document concerns with the appropriate party.
- Learn parking, package, trash, emergency, and HOA or building procedures.
07After the move
- Review the mover’s final invoice and follow its process promptly for documented loss or damage.
- Confirm final utility bills, deposits, refunds, mail forwarding, and storage charges.
- Finish remaining address updates, including government and voter records as applicable.
- Update the home inventory and securely keep receipts, photographs, warranties, and property records.
- Schedule home, landscape, pool, HVAC, and pest maintenance as needed.
- Review official local alerts, household meeting points, and evacuation routes.
